Welcome to WIC!!

The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program is located at Martin Luther King Heritage Health Center site. WIC is a federally-funded nutrition education program which provides supplemental foods to qualifying pregnant, breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding women, infants and children up to the age of 5.

In August, 2009, specific changes were made in our food packages to match the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005. These guidelines are keys to healthy eating habits and help to reduce the risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and some cancers. The New WIC Way now offers fruits and vegetables, whole grain products, and low-fat milk to participants as well as Gerber infant foods for babies 6 -12 months of age.

WIC promotes breastfeeding as the norm for infants because of the significant health benefits to the baby and the mother. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends breastfeeding exclusively for at least 6 months of age. We offer breastfeeding classes to prenatal mothers as well as breastfeeding support to mothers who have delivered. Breastfeeding Peer Counselors and WIC Nutritionists are always available to provide support and encouragement for WIC participants to ensure a successful and positive experience.
